Langdon Hospital, part of the Devon Partnership NHS Trust, recently built the £27m Dewnans Centre – a medium-secure mental health facility- which provides care and treatment for people with a wide variety of mental health needs.

Each of the centre’s four self-contained wards contains 60 en-suite rooms and extensive therapy facilities, with separate courtyard gardens, TV lounges, laundry, interview rooms, offices, arts and craft centres and dining room. This newest addition to the National Health Service’s (NHS) portfolio of mental health inpatient facilities was the first unit to come online under the newly revised Design Guide for Medium Secure Units, which stipulate that materials and components used at Dewnans be both tamper and vandal proof whilst maintaining the required level of security and safety. Logiscan Security Systems Ltd, the security integrator on this year long project, selected the Elpas real-time location system (RTLS) from Tyco Security Products as the backbone for it’s access control and alarm project. Logiscan Security chose the system after recognising that Elpas’s Active RFID/RTLS- based system could operate within the constraints of the anti-vandalism directives and withstand a typically harsh environment.
